Woolff Gallery, London, is honoured to present David Wheeler's (1952-2019) retrospective exhibition.

 

Many of you will be familiar with this artist's highly recognisable work, David Wheeler was undoubtably one of the most popular artists represented by Woolff Gallery in past years, his cityscapes and views across the river being some of his most popular paintings.

David had a rich and varied life - creative at every moment - we were fortunate enough to delve into this in more detail after speaking with the Wheeler family on the subject of this exhibition.

 

“Grandad discovered his passion for art whilst studying at the Christopher Wren School in Hammersmith, West London. He was prevented from pursuing this passion due to economic circumstances, after his father, a master bricklayer, explained the reality that he would have to get a trade under his belt to earn his keep. From the age of 15, he served as a toolmaker’s apprentice, but his artistic abilities quickly took him to the drawing office. ASHLEIGH DENNIS

David Wheeler worked in a number of presigious careers, including design teams for the aviation industry, and the energy industry, he eventually tired of the city and moved to Cornwall where he was to own and develop a number of hotels. Then, during the 90's he started to follow his dream of becoming an artist.

Leaving the city didn’t take the city boy out of him: as can be seen in his cityscapes. There are notes of L.S Lowry in these works which look back on city life with a nostalgia for the throngs of people, the beiges and the greys. David Wheeler's distinct style of the panoramic horizon also filters through into his paintings of the countryside, we see Cornwall and Provence painted with his signature style, a horizon, rich colours, yet instead of a throng of people or crowds, we see impressions of lavender fields, or groups of cows or sheep gathered together in the foreground.
 

Be it the colours and climates, or the impression of a distant skyline fading into the distance in a few strokes of impasto, David was a master at capturing the hustle and bustle of a city. One of David's final wishes was to have a retrospective of his artwork in London, so this Autumn, we are delighted to be able to present this body of work here at Woolff Gallery.
